When buying a toilet, you need to be able to answer the following questions:

  • Do I need an S-Trap or a P-Trap for my toilet and what is the difference?
  • What is the setout of the installation?
  • Will I need a rear or side/bottom entry?

S-Trap or P-Trap

Basiclly, an S-trap is designed to outlet directly through the floor.

A P-trap means the waste outlet through a wall.

Setout

The setout of S-trap is the distance from the wall to the centre of the waste pipe in the floor. While the setout of P-trap is the distance from the floor to the centre of the waste outlet on the wall.

Entry / inlet

The entry is where the flush water enters the toilet cistern. You may heard of side entry or bottom entry. A bottom entry toilet has a tap on the wall under the cistern, on either the right or left hand side of the toilet, and it connects to the bottom of the cistern. A side entry is the same as bottom entry. A rear entry toilet connects inside the toilet cistern.
